August 1, 2021 marks Colorado’s 145th birthday – 145 years of growth, innovation, change, and comradery. Now that’s something to cheer about! In this blog, we’ll talk about how Colorado Day started, what makes this great state special, and how you can celebrate this year.

Colorado Day History

Back in 1876, on the first day in August, Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation acknowledging Colorado as a state. Afterwards, Colorado Day was a widely-celebrated state holiday for many years, but it became a day of observance rather than a holiday when the state started observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a public holiday in 1985.

It’s no longer consider a state or federal holiday. As a result, most businesses are open and work is in session. However, locals have found time to celebrate this occasion every year for decades – and we’re not stopping now!

Why FPD Loves The Centennial State

From the rapidly growing aerospace industry to the massive outdoor sporting industry, Colorado is a diverse and expanding state – and that’s perfect for product design. Not to mention, Colorado has incredible people, and people are what we’re passionate about.

In February of 2015, Flying Pig Designs opened its doors in Lafayette, CO, and since then we’ve grown attached to the creative, outgoing community that surrounds us. Additionally, Keir Hart, business owner and H.P.I.C (Head Pig in Charge), grew up in the area, and many of our team members have claimed Colorado as their forever home.

Want to know why we’re such big fans? These are some of the reasons FPD loves Colorado:

“I enjoy the active community. It seems like everybody is always doing something!”

“I love how friendly the people in the area are. I just moved here less than a year ago, and everyone who finds out is thrilled to welcome me to Colorado. It makes me feel more at home every time.”

“The weather is very nice. It’s always changing, but it never lasts long. I really enjoy the variety.”

“Colorado is very diverse. For instance, if you’re a foodie, then you come to Colorado. Want to explore outdoor sports? We have mountains, plains, reservoirs, and more. And if you’re a live music fan? Red Rocks is unbeatable. Anything you want to do, you can find a place to do it here.”

Fun Facts

* Colorado boasts over 300 days of sunshine annually despite being well known for mountains and winter sports.

* Colorado’s State Capitol gains its red color from a marble named “Beulah red”. It took six years (from 1894 to 1900) to cut, polish, and install the marble. All the Beulah red marble in the world went into the Capitol, and it cannot be replaced at any price.

In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates was inspired to write the words to “America the Beautiful” on top of Pike’s Peak, one of Colorado’s 14, 000-foot mountains.

Colfax Avenue (that runs through Downtown Denver) is the longest continuous street in America.

Denver is nicknamed “The Mile High City” because it sits exactly 5,280 feet – or one mile above sea level.

Colorado contains 75% of the land area of the United States and has an altitude over 10,000 feet!
